I am a math education scholar currently working as the Math Program Manager at Hamlin Robinson (a school that serves students with dyslexia and language learning differences) and Associate Faculty at City University of Seattle, School of Education and Leadership.
Brief Background
I was born and raised in Arizona where I obtained dual degrees in Special Education and Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University. I completed my student teaching in Southern California then returned to Arizona to begin my teaching career in 2010. I started off teaching special education (grades 5 through 12), where I also supported students transition from middle to high school. I gradually became the math specialist, teaching a math essentials class for students with disabilities, and co-teaching Algebra and Geometry courses. Eventually I obtained my secondary mathematics certification and transitioned to teach math full time. In 2018, I moved to Seattle, Washington where I continued to teach secondary math. I earned my Master of Education in Learning Design and Technologies (Ed Tech) at Arizona State University before completing my Doctorate in the Learning, Literacies, and Technologies program, with an emphasis in Math Education, also at ASU.
I found that my special education training helped me facilitate equitable and adaptable instruction to students of all ability levels, and I strive to foster culturally responsive pedagogical practices. Positioning students as co-constructors of knowledge, I design inquiry-focused math instruction that not only embraces each students’ uniqueness, but embeds different perspectives and viewpoints into tasks, setting students up for success in the math classroom and beyond.
